Is Unified Communications the biggest scam since Ponzi?

“For the next few years UC will be a battleground between mega-vendors like Microsoft and Cisco who want to suck you in to their technological whirlpool where you’ll be trapped paying license fees for a decade.”

You are right on target. There are a couple of general UC components of value, i.e. find me – follow me or voice mail to email, that provide value. The rest of them are white noise unless implemented as a specific voice and data business process improvement. We implement these using open source tools at 10% of the commercial product cost and selectively – not as a “UC Package” – or a slew of Microsoft servers. The consumer driven implementation of advanced communications tools is followed closely by the open source model of development and commercial support at pennies on the dollar to the major vendors. Good luck with those “UC” bundles.
